Data Migration Strategy: Three Steps to Success
How do organizations manage the maze of exceptions, delays, and additional tools required for data or cloud migration? The answer is to remove the exceptions. When you are no longer faced with a roadblock at every turn, the data migration process moves smoothly and quickly. To further accelerate the data migration, you can maximize your availability by using every minute of the day to its fullest potential. Below are three steps to use when approaching any data migration.
Three Steps to Data Migration: Sync, Snap, Test
Sync: Join/insert your data migration tool to an existing fiber channel storage area network (FC SAN) non-disruptively.
Migrate the selected LUNs to the new storage – without impact – using intelligent quality of service (iQoS).
iQoS allows individual I/Os to be monitored to ensure there is no application impact to the host and to dynamically utilize even small breaks in production traffic to migrate more data through to the new array.
Once the data is migrated, two complete copies of the data exist. The original copy remains on the source storage, and the new copy is on the destination storage.
Snap: Remove the legacy storage.
Using pMotion, you can now remove the old array while hosts still believe they are connected to the old storage. It emulates the old array to the hosts, which are actually running on the new storage array. There is no urgency to cut over to the new storage as the old storage can now be removed!
In a clustered environment, nodes in the cluster are remediated to the new storage one at a time. They are rejoined and roll through the cluster, delivering a migration with true zero downtime.
Test: Validate drive, multi-pathing software, application, etc. to ensure the final cutover is accurate and occurs without disruption.
No exceptions, no limitations.
Sync, snap, and test makes it easier than ever to move onto your new storage regardless of its physical location. Data is not collected before the move begins. The host code does not need to be remediated. As soon as the data is copied, all performance benefits, cost savings and efficiencies of the new storage are realized immediately.
